DTM 2022: A look back on Saturday

Proud winners, smiling fans & lots of race action. That was the DTM on Saturday.

The fans experienced a real DTM thriller at the Red Bull Ring on Saturday. A delighted winner Nick Cassidy continued the Ferrari double success of 2021 at Spielberg in an AlphaTauri AF Corse and was presented with his trophy by a motorsport legend – three-time MotoGP World Champion Jorge Lorenzo. “Winning in the AlphaTauri car at the Red Bull Ring is very special achievement and a personal career highlight for me. It’s a great moment! It was a tough race today. I tried to take every corner perfectly, and I’m overjoyed,” Cassidy said.

Lucas Auer delivered a strong home race but was given a ten-second penalty for speeding in the pit lane. This time penalty and the penalty Thomas Preining were lifted by the sports stewards after the race. In the case of Auer, it was determined that a speeding violation recorded by GPS in the pit lane was incorrect. After checking the video recordings, the vehicle contact between Preining and Nico Müller was assessed as a normal racing incident for which no driver bears full responsibility.

The decisions also affect the championship rating. Auer is now tied on points with Austro-Italian Mirko Bortolotti, who finished third in the GRT Lamborghini behind Nick Cassidy in the AlphaTauri AF Corse Ferrari and René Rast in the ABT Audi. “Going from 6th to 3rd place made it a good race for me, especially as the track doesn’t necessarily suit us on paper. After two difficult weekends, we are happy to get some good points and finish on the podium,” said Bortolotti.  You can find the race result here.

Taxi driver Hirscher

In addition to the DTM drivers, Austrian ski legend Marcel Hirscher also put the pedal down at the Red Bull Ring. Hirscher chauffeured fans around the race track in an Audi R8 LMS. The much-coveted right to sit next to Hirscher was drawn among all ticket holders. Things were equally lively in the air. The gyrocopter pilots of the Rotorwings Formation Team flew over the start-finish straight in an impressive triangular formation shortly before the start of the race, artfully producing coloured smoke.

Magic mopeds

The motorsport fans were amazed when 80 Puch Maxis lined up on the grid shortly before the start of the DTM race. The legendary mopeds proved to be real eye-catchers – along with the thoroughbred GT3 racing cars. Gerhard Berger also stopped by to try one. The DTM boss was not part of the flying lap, however.

DTM Fan Village hotspot

Despite the autumnal weather, things were really hot in the DTM Fan Village. While a DJ provided casual beats on the event stage, the little ones let off steam in the bouncy castle, on the carrera track and in kart races. The adults had their fill of fun too with e-sports simulators and the pit stop game. All those who had secured a Pitwalk ticket in advance had a chance to go to the pit lane. As well as this glimpse behind the scenes, there was also an autograph session with the DTM drivers.

Last chance

Tomorrow provides your last chance to see the thoroughbred GT3 cars live at the Red Bull Ring. The ticket points (main ticket point in front of the Red Bull Wing & DTM Fan Village ticket point) are open for you from 08:00. Free parking is available at the track – within walking distance of the race track, of course. Everything else you need to know as a visitor can be found here.
