Sunday’s race of the International German GT Championship at the Red Bull Ring was already a thriller even before the pit stop. Maro Engel (GER) drove his Mercedes into a guardrail at the Niki Lauda curve. After a red flag and a restart behind the safety car, Marvin Kirchhöfer (GER) raced into a superb lead with his Corvette. The Porsche ace Klaus Bachler fought his way up five positions to fifth before the Austrian span off into the gravel, ending his race. Switzerland‘s Jeffrey Schmidt took over the leading Corvette and drove it to victory for Callaway Competition. Behind them, the two Grasser-Lamborghinis of Mirko Bortolotti (ITA) and Rolf Ineichen (CH) pushed British BMW driver Nick Yelloly all the way in a battle for the podium until the final lap. They finished in fourth and fifth. Completing the podium was the German Audi pair of Kim-Luis Schramm and Dennis Marschall in second place.

Jeffrey Schmidt (CH): “Winning here is really difficult. We weren’t able to make any mistakes at all. We gave our all and are really pleased about the win. We were able to keep out of the chaos at the start well, and we always got away well in the restarts.“

Race day 1

On the first race day at the Red Bull Ring, the drivers of the ADAC GT Masters thrilled with numerous fierce duels and provided a fitting start to the summer of motorsport at Spielberg. The fans at the racing circuit experienced thrilling battles for every inch in all of the series. The most exciting contest from an Austrian point of view was the battle for the podium between Porsche driver Thomas Preining and the Grasser-Lamborghini with the number 63 and Mirko Bortolotti at the wheel. Together with Albert Costa Balboa (ESP), the Italian put in a thrilling racing performance that was enough for second place. Thomas Preining’s partner, Christian Engelhart, finished the race form Küs Team Bernhard in 11th place. The second best Austrian was Max Hofer, partnered by Tim Zimmermann (GER), for Grasser Racing in 14th. Austrian team Wimmer Werk Motorsport were able to celebrate a home win in the ADAC TCR Germany with  Eric Scalvini.

Austria was strongly represented in the field of drivers in the 2021 ADAC GT Masters at the Red Bull Ring. As many as eight Austrian drivers lined up to start the International German GT Championship. Including all the partner series, there were 17 – making for a great treat for the fans who were able to cheer the drivers on for the first time this year in Spielberg and herald the start to the motorsport summer!
