Max Verstappen has taken his Austrian racing team’s first pole position at Spielberg in sensational style. Second fastest was the Finn, Valtteri Bottas, ahead of his team-mate Lewis Hamilton. The fans can now look forward to an exciting race day on Sunday with every chance of a home win.
With a time of 1:03.841 minutes, Max Verstappen dominated qualifying for the Formula 1 BWT Großer Preis der Steiermark 2021 at the Red Bull Ring. The Dutchman beat second-placed Valtteri Bottas by close to two tenths of a second. The Finn will start the race in fifth, however, due to a penalty from free practice, and therefore makes way for his team-mate Lewis Hamilton to start next to Max Verstappen on the front row.
Max Verstappen (NED / Red Bull Racing): “From yesterday to today we made a few changes and took a good step forward. With the traffic in the final turn it wasn‘t easy, but I‘m super happy about the pole, of course. I am looking forward now to going into the home race for the team from right in front.”
Lewis Hamilton (GBR / Mercedes): “Congratulations to Max. I gave everything, but it wasn‘t enough. There was close to a second missing in practice. In qualifying we managed to get a bit closer. We still need to work on the pace. We will give everything!“
Valtteri Bottas (FIN /Mercedes): “We had a few problems in practice, and we therefore made a change to the set-up. Our qualifying was strong. We got the maximum out of the car. I am starting from fifth, it‘s true, but anything is possible in the race!”
In 2020, the Virtual Styrian Green Carpet made its debut at Spielberg. At the 2021 Styrian Grand Prix, the Formula 1 stars chatted again on their arrival to the Red Bull Ring paddock with a select group of fans via an online meeting.

A musical highlight is guaranteed before the start of the 2021 Styrian Grand Prix. Austrian folk Rock’n’Roller Andreas Gabalier will transmit Styrian tradition around the world again on Sunday with a rendition of the Dachsteinlied – the regional anthem.
