Red Bull Ring Classics 2023: Group C Supercup

The Red Bull Ring Classics is an amazing display of motorsport history. We present the racing series in detail.

Experience the fascinating motorsport world of yesteryear on the weekend of 9th ‑ 11th June when the Red Bull Ring Classics comes to Spielberg. Among the vehicles lining up on the grid will be the powerful cars of the Group C era. One German driver in particular is closely associated with this racing series, namely Hans-Joachim ‘Strietzel’ Stuck, who secured the 1986 drivers’ title in a Porsche 962 bearing the starting number 17. The following year, he repeated the feat.

Back then, in 1987, Stuck tested the new Porsche PDK (double-clutch) transmission for the first time. “At half past three the mechanics filled the tank for the last time. Then I drove until the tank was empty. I parked the car in the garage, locked it and drove home to Garmisch,” Stuck recalled. The PDK delivered a huge advantage from the very first lap, even though the extra weight pushed the lap times down. The drivers no longer had to come off the gas when shifting up.

The feeling when I drove the PDK for the first time was sensational. I could keep my hands on the steering wheel when shifting gears. There was no more switching – that was seventh heaven for me. It was incredible fun to test the double-clutch-system

“The feeling when I drove the PDK for the first time was sensational. I could keep my hands on the steering wheel when shifting gears. There was no more switching – that was seventh heaven for me. It was incredible fun to test the double-clutch-system”, said Stuck. Today, the PDK is part of every modern racing car.

Nevertheless, the handling of the cars was really hard work for the heroes of the last century, as the lack of modern power steering proved to be especially energy-sapping over the distance. At the Red Bull Ring Classics, the historic racing cars will return to the track with their incomparable sound which is guaranteed to give real motorsport fans goose bumps.
