Gustl Auinger concrats a young driver at the MiniGP

The Austrian who defeated the Italians

Gustl Auinger celebrated his first GP triumph in 1985 at the German Grand Prix in Hockenheim. Two further victories followed at Silverstone and in Anderstorp, Sweden. Remarkably, all three victories were achieved in the rain. He finished third in the overall standings that year. In 1986, in addition to the victory at Silverstone, the Austrian celebrated the greatest triumph of his career in the stronghold of the then dominant Italians in Misano: with victory in the San Marino Grand Prix ahead of all the Italian works teams!
