Tens of thousands of fans witnessed a real racing thriller on Sunday. The main actors: René Rast and Thomas Preining. The Austrian clung on to the rear of Rast in the final third of the race, but the BMW veteran was able to defend his position to the finish and repeat his victory from the previous year. “Winning is always great, of course, especially at the Red Bull Ring, said Rast with a beaming smile after the race. “I love it here.”
Preining may have had to settle for P2 on the track, but off it, he was the clear number one. The fans decked out in red-white-red took every opportunity to rub shoulders with the reigning champion, including the pit walk and Meet the Drivers. “When the time came to sign autographs, it got pretty hectic,” said Preining. “The fans are great.” Dakar Rally hero Matthias Walkner also lined up for a selfie with the local favourite on the grid.
Various other sporting celebrities were also spotted in the DTM paddock at the Red Bull Ring, including German Olympic rowing champion Oliver Zeidler, 2018 Hahnenkamm winner Thomas Dreßen and the newly crowned endurance world champion in the LMGT3 class, Klaus Bachler.
Fans – big and small – experienced an unforgettable weekend with autograph sessions, VIP talks and a ball pit. And the best part? On a booked service road tour, visitors were able to feel several hundred horsepower up close. They drove along the Grand Prix track in specially provided vehicles, just a few meters away from the curbs where the DTM cars raced past.
